How a hotel earns its lion
The Lion Index lists only the finest hotels in the world. Admission is not for sale, and no hotel may apply. A house is listed when it passes four gates — and keeps its place only while it continues to pass them.
- IThree Keys in the Michelin Guide — the guide's highest distinction for a hotel.
- IIFive Stars in the Forbes Travel Guide.
- IIIA signature suite — a finest suite worthy of the house.
- IVButler service — personal, dedicated, and on call.
LION TIER
BLACK LION
Beyond the gates: a house of history and immense renown — some of its rooms, money alone cannot always book.
GOLD LION
All four gates passed.
SILVER LION
One gate short — and still finer than almost anywhere else on earth.

DISCLAIMER
The Lion Index is an independent editorial project, published for interest alone. Ratings are compiled from public sources — the Michelin Guide, the Forbes Travel Guide and the hotels' own publications — and reflect the position at the time of review. No payment is accepted for a listing, and a listing is never guaranteed.
